Greggs has launched a new weather-based lunch offer, but it won't be available every day.

The ‘Quicknic Code’ is a new scientific formula developed by the bakery chain that determines which regions of Britain receive a lunch deal based on weather conditions and customer behaviour.

Combining two years of data, the code analyses lunchtime temperature, cloud cover, rainfall, pollen count and the nation’s appetite for eating outdoors.

The deal includes a cold baguette and a Sausage Roll from just £4.75, saving customers up to 40p, but it's only available on days where the formula triggers a ‘Quicknic Day’.

How does the Greggs 'Quicknic' code work?

The Greggs 'Quicknic' code is as follows:

This is where:

  • T is the forecast temperature between 12pm and 2pm
  • Tᵦ is the regional temperature at which lunchtime behaviour starts to change
  • C is cloud cover
  • R is the chance of rain
  • P is the pollen penalty
  • I is the Greggs Lunch Outside Index

A region qualifies for the deal when it scores 24 or more points in the model, which uses regional baselines to reflect the different temperatures at which people change their lunchtime habits.

Greggs says temperature has the greatest influence, while cloud, rain and pollen reduce the score.

Zoe Harris, customer and marketing director at Greggs, said: "Nobody has ever put mathematicians, scientists and Sausage Roll makers together to create a lunch deal before, but that’s exactly what we’ve done.

"Determining who gets the Quicknic deal isn’t based on just one weather forecast.

"Our formula crunches six important factors, from temperature and cloud cover to pollen levels and chance of rain, before deciding whether our new deal goes live in each region."

The offer is designed to encourage customers to enjoy lunch outdoors, with Ms Harris calling it "It may be the most scientifically advanced Sausage Roll and baguette deal ever created."

The Quicknic forecast will be announced every Sunday (until the end of the summer) for the week ahead from the Greggs Forecasting Office, covering all 12 regions of Britain.

On eligible days, customers can choose between a Sausage Roll, Chicken Roll, or Vegan Roll (Pork Free) and pair it with any cold baguette at a savings of up to 40p.

Greggs is advising customers to check their local shop or its social media channels to see when the Quicknic deal is available in their area.

Research by Greggs shows that the average Brit eats lunch at their desk four times a week.
