AN acclaimed Australian theatre group will be performing at a charity event in West Cumbria next month.

NuWorks Theatre have included a visit to Gosforth Public Hall as part of their upcoming European Tour, performing two contemporary versions of classic plays.

After performing at venues in Germany, then Chester and Stratford Upon Avon, they will arrive in Cumbria on Saturday October 7.

NuWorks are a Melbourne-based theatre company, who as well as producing new topical plays, perform plays from Shakespeare to Brecht, and musicals including Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

In Gosforth, they begin by performing Snow White, then after an interval with refreshments, their version of Romeo and Juliet.

Both will be entertaining, modern, with song and dance, and very professional, and are suitable for the whole family.

Snow White is their new musical adaptation of the tale. Not exactly a panto, it is faithful to the original in most respects: there’s Snow White, the Wicked Queen, and the Huntsman. The seven dwarves have morphed into the Hip Hop Brothers and there are a few extra characters.

Romeo and Juliet is pure Shakespeare, heavily edited and recontextualised, set in relatively modern times, but otherwise unchanged to produce a piece of theatre that will appeal to younger and older audiences.

It is complemented with a number of contemporary songs from Pink, Coldplay and Muse.

After the performances, the 24-strong touring company will stay and chat with attendees, sharing their experiences and tales from the tour.

The event is a charity night, and money raised will be shared between Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, the Public Hall, and Gosforth First Responders, who will be in attendance.

Tickets are now on sale, priced £12 for adults and £6 for under-18s. To book, phone 019467 28392.
