Cleator Moor Celtic pipped local rivals Frizington Whitestar in the fight for the Smurfit Kappa Cumberland League Division One title.

Celtic leapfrogged Whitestar with a close victory in the final game of the season last week.

Going into the match both teams were on level points and a draw would have done for Whitestar.

Celtic’s Byron Todd opened the scoring on 42 minutes, which gave them the advantage at half time 1-0.

Whitestar started the second half the stronger with Jordan Lee firing in an equaliser on 55 minutes to swing the game back in Whitestar’s favour.

But then Celtic scored their vital second goal with just 15 minutes to go as Ryan Hall slid in his shot from the right hand side of the penalty box to give them a 2-1 lead.

Whitestar didn’t give up and were denied an equaliser in the dying minutes by Cleator’s right hand goal post.

This was the last opportunity of the match and Frizington just couldn’t draw level.

Cleator Moor Celtic were crowned champions after a hard fought battle, with both teams playing well and Frizington Whitestar being worthy runners-up.

Workington Athletic won the Ken Glover Memorial Shield in the final against Bransty Rangers on Saturday, which went to extra time.

Athletic started the stronger and took a 1-0 lead on 11 minutes with a Gregory Armstrong strike, this seemed to spur on the division one side and they quickly levelled proceedings with a Liam O’Pray header.

Then Bransty’s Mike Garroway spun and turned in the box to fire Rangers into a 2-1 half time lead.

The second half started and it was a nip and tuck affair with the only goal levelling things up on 55 minutes with a Mathew Perry strike, with 2-2 at full time another 30 minutes was needed to find the winners.

It was premiership champions Workington Athletic who broke the deadlock with Tom Pardini scoring the all-important goal in the 115th minute to give them a 3-2 lead.

With Bransty not giving up and pushing for the equaliser, Athletic caught them on the break and Stuart Gray sealed the tie with a simple tap in to give Workington Athletic their third trophy of the season.

They will now be going for their fourth with the last Cumberland League final of the year, the GMB Whitehaven Cup final against Wigton Harriers at Windscale FC on Saturday, ko 2pm.
