ANOTHER World War One VC recipient from our area was Harry Christian, who for 40 years was landlord of the Parkhead Inn, Thornhill, Egremont.SILECROFT-BORN Lance Sgt Thomas Mayson, who disabled an enemy machine gun to win his VC during action at Wieltje, Belgium, in July 1917, is remembered on a memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard, Whicham.

Whitehaven’s hidden links to the Victoria Cross

viccross WHITEHAVEN has only had one recipient of the Victoria Cross, Private Abraham Acton (1892–1915), for his bravery during World War One. Yet Acton was not the only soldier from that conflict with links to Whitehaven to be nominated for this military decoration of the highest order.
