A CONTROVERSIAL cull of deer trapped between two fences at Sellafield has taken place – with three animals being shot dead.
by Andrew Clarke
The Whitehaven News revealed in January that a number of wild roe deer were due to be killed after their habitat became enclosed between two newly-erected security fences at the nuclear site’s south perimeter.
Despite vocal public opposition to the plan – including two demonstrations at the site – the cull has been completed and three animals killed. It was originally thought that between five and 15 deer were trapped.
Sellafield Ltd says that the cull was a “last resort” and was acting on the advice of deer experts.
