A NEW TRADITION: Pick up your new-look Whitehaven News!

This month has seen a milestone in our 162-year history as we changed the format of our print edition from a broadsheet to compact.

We made this important change after gauging opinions from readers and advertisers.

The changes we’ve made are designed to provide ease of handling and ease of reading. We hope the new format will appeal to even more people, and we will make further changes depending on what you tell us you either like or dislike.

But some things will never change. We remain committed to campaigning on behalf of our readers.

Our team of reporters and photographers live and work at the heart of the community. You will see them out and about at hundreds of local events as they ensure that the newspaper is a trusted voice throughout the area.

And we provide a necessary platform for readers’ views on important topics.

We are first and foremost a NEWS paper – but that doesn’t tell the full story of what we do!

You will certainly find everything you need to know about what is happening in your community, from planning applications, a comprehensive what’s on guide, family announcements, retirements, golden weddings – the list goes on.

If you are looking for a job, we’ve got a weekly section dedicated to recruitment and training opportunities.

If you are looking for a new home, we have a comprehensive weekly round-up of everything that’s on the market.

If you want to change your car, we have up to the minute listings of the models for sale as well as all the latest road tests.

If you want to check where’s best for a night out, we have an in depth round-up of the local entertainment and leisure scene.

We also publish much acclaimed supplements and guides to key sectors of life in West Cumbria.

We have more-than-double the number of jam-packed pages, including an expanded news service with two pages of dedicated parish news and two pages of business news, plus four pages of opinion – including two columns; weekly from our MP Jamie Reed and a second that will give all sides of the political spectrum a voice. That’s not to mention 10 feature pages of arts, food and the outdoors, and nine pages of sport, including a new page dedicated to results and fixtures.

But the more things change, the more they stay the same; we won’t move away from the principles that have been at our core since 1852. We’ll continue to fight our community’s corner; telling your stories, celebrating your success, while analysing and scrutinising your health service, schools, councils and the nuclear industry.

And speaking of the community, that’s where you come in. We want the new Whitehaven News to be more interactive than ever.
