Lidl eyes up bigger Whitehaven store

LIDL’S Whitehaven store closed yesterday – but the company says it wants to build a new, bigger supermarket here.
A spokeswoman said Lidl wanted “to reassure customers that we remain committed to acquiring a new site in Whitehaven that will accommodate a new, larger store. This will provide the local community with the high-level shopping experience they require and deserve.”
The German supermarket chain, which has 600 stores in the UK, arrived in Whitehaven in 2001 but after 12 years trading announced the closure of its Flatt Walks store a year ago.
Earlier this month, however, it confirmed it was “actively searching” within Cumbria for locations to build new larger stores.
“We want to thank all of our customers in Whitehaven for their loyal support,” added the spokeswoman.
