Ladies from Whitehaven telephone exchange reconnect

FOR women who once talked for a living there was plenty to say. You couldn’t get a word in edge-ways and there was lots of catching up to do as 20 former telephonists came together for a reunion.

By Margaret Crosby

The ‘hello girls’ who once manned the switchboards at Whitehaven telephone exchange had come from near and far for the gathering, held at Whitehaven Golf Club on Thursday.

It is now 30 years since the 60s-style telephone exchange at Catherine Street closed and the girls are now in their 70s and 80s.

The idea to meet up again and organise a reunion was the idea of ex-telephonist Janet Pickering, formerly of Bransty, but who now lives at Hardygate, near Workington.

Janet, who with husband Ken will be celebrating her diamond wedding anniversary later this year, said: “It was a wonderful, joyful day with lots of laughter.

“There was plenty of reminiscing about the good old days and we are now hoping to make it a regular event.”
