Court round-up

Man arrested and bailed

A MAN was arrested on suspicion of affray and suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in Whitehaven.

The 21-year-old was arrested by police after a woman reported being threatened by a man with a knife in the Market Place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man was interviewed by police and has been released on bail until April 11.

Officer assaulted

A CLEATOR woman has been fined for assaulting a police officer.

Victoria McCrickard, 25, of Croft Terrace, must also pay £75 compensation to the police officer she admitted assaulting.

Costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge were also imposed.

Shoplifting fine

A WHITEHAVEN man has been fined for shoplifting.

Thomas McDowell, 44, of St James’ Court, admitted stealing a bottle of wine and a soft drink from the Co-op in Whitehaven and must pay an £80 fine. He must also compensate the store with £5.93 and pay £85 costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.

He pleaded guilty to a further charge of failing to answer bail and was fined £120.

Drugs charge

DARREN Smurthwaite, 32, of Duke Street, Whitehaven, has admitted possessing Valium– a Class C drug. He was fined £100 plus £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Order breached

WILLIAM Hammell has been fined £60 after he admitted contacting a person he was forbidden from doing so due to an existing court order.

The defendant, 48, of Richmond Hill Road, Whitehaven, must also pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
