TALENTED young authors from St Bees Village School have received awards following the Rotary Young Writer contest.

The theme of the competition was bullying and saw pupils write about a variety of ideas on the subject.

The winner was Emily Nicholls, second place was scooped by Lawrie Walker and there was a tie for third place with Amber Lewitt and Sasha Kelly taking joint honours.

Entries were judged by Jeffrey Evans, a retired head of English who worked in St Bees for more than 19 years.

He said: "I have been impressed by the overall high standard of imagination, punctuation and accuracy in this year's entries."

Donald Brownrigg, of the Rotary Club of Whitehaven, presented the awards.

He said: "The event has been a big success once again and we hope to hold another one next year.

"The event is important because it allows the children to express themselves. Being able to write English properly is a very important skill in whatever these children will go on to do with their lives."
