A full-on pink pageant was held by West Cumbrian pupils to mark breast cancer awareness day.

Hundreds of children at Jericho School were dressed in shades of magenta, fuchsia, watermelon, bubblegum and blush to raise £460 for Breast Cancer Now.

The Wear It Pink day was a national event to raise awareness and support the charity.

Allyson Quayle is a reception teacher at Jericho School who dressed in her pink bridesmaid dress for the event.

She said: "We held an assembly with all the children to explain why we were holding the day.

"We know many families and staff who have been affected by breast cancer; it is an issue close to our hearts."

The Whitehaven school had also raised £600 for Macmillan Cancer Research following a coffee morning last week.

Allyson said: "We would like to thank the parents and community for their support in raising over £1,000 for good causes."

Breast Cancer Now aim to get as many people as possible involved in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

A spokesperson for the charity said: "As the UK's largest breast cancer research charity, along with our supporters, we do this through campaigning, collecting, an array of events across the UK.

"There are plenty of other ways to get involved and support our work during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and beyond.

"From campaigning to help women get access to the breast cancer drugs they need, to sharing information women need to know about checking their breasts."
