And Bob and Ruth Telford, from Mirehouse, say the secret to a happy marriage is supporting each other through good and bad times.
They first met at the Empress Ballroom in Whitehaven and courted for a year before Bob proposed in an ice cream shop on the town’s King Street.
They married at St Nicholas’ Church and lived at Richmond following the wedding.
Five years later, Bob was involved in a serious accident at his workplace, Haig Pit, which resulted in his leg being amputated.
“This made us stronger and brought us together as a couple,” said 81-year-old Bob.
The couple then moved to Mirehouse, where they still live on Honister Road.
They have five children – three girls and two boys – nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Ruth, 79, said: “The recipe to a long and successful, happy marriage, is being there for each other and supporting each other through good and bad times, as well as having family around us.”
