Watch out Bradley Wiggins! West Lakes Academy cyclists secured FOUR gold medals during the Tour of Britain.

During Stage 2 of the tour - from Carlisle to Kendal - academy students took part in a time trial against four other schools.

The pupils raced up Beast Banks in Kendal to beat off competition from Keswick School, Settlebeck School and Kirbie Kendal School.

"It was a one kilometre hill time trial with racers setting off in groups of three. We won four golds in the individual girls, individual boys, team boys and team girls," said Alex Price, PE teacher at the academy.

Naomi Brennan secured gold in the girls' competition while Eddie Clough was fastest in the boys' event.

And in the team competitions Brennan, Aleesha Roberts and Sophie Price took top spot for the girls with Clough and Leon Beardsley winning the boys' title.

The series of Go-Ride races took place near the finishing straight of the tour's second stage. All the competing schools run their own Go-Ride school cycling clubs which aim to get more young people interested in cycling.

Olympic heroes Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish cycled through Cumbria during the gruelling tours visit to the county.

The cycling legends completed Stage 2 of the week-long event, which ran from Carlisle to Kendal. And a host of stars in the cycling world from Rio gold medalist Elia Viviani to sprint king Andre Greipel also took to Cumbria's roads.

Riders took in Penrith, Pooley Bridge and Hesket Newmarket before sprinting down Cockermouth Main Street. From there they went onto Lorton, Keswick, Grasmere and Ambleside and finished in Kendal.

Organisers described the crowds as "fantastic", with the Tour of Britain tweeting: "Great crowds in the Lakes. Lovely to see you all roadside."

The tour, which featured eight stages, finished in London and was won by Britain's Steve Cummings.
