A West Cumbrian supermarket chain will help collect for a local foodbank next week.

A collection for the North Lakes Foodbank will be held at the Tesco supermarket in Workington on Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3, between 9am and 5pm.

Shopping lists will be handed out to shoppers by volunteers, who can then drop the items off and Tesco will top up the amount donated by 20 per cent.

The collected food will be used in three-day food parcels and for the foodbank's Holiday Lunchpacks 4 Kids scheme, which runs during the six-week summer holiday.

A similar event is also set to be held in Whitehaven's Tesco supermarket.

Jessie Hendry Gooding, project manager at The North Lakes Foodbank, said: "Over the last year, we have given out three-day emergency food parcels to nearly 6,000 people, including 1,800 children.

"We also help prevent 'holiday hunger' by giving out lunch packs to 300 families during the school holidays."
