George Litt, of Birley Court, Whitehaven, also denied a second charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a Boston terrier when he appeared at West Cumbria Courthouse, Workington, on Friday.
The offences are alleged to have taken place in St Bees on August 18 last year.
The defendant will stand trial on both counts at Workington court on February 29.
