A DETERMINED team of walkers completed a gruelling charity walk in memory of a popular Cleator Moor man.

Tez Baxter and a group of his friends embarked on a fundraising challenge, covering 10 Wainwrights, in memory of his late father Arthur.

The team raised £3,500 in The Arthur Baxter Mountain Marathon, which will be given to Macmillan nurses and Cancer Research UK.

Son Tez said his father died in October last year, at the age of 58, following a battle with secondary cancer.

He said: "The world lost a truly great man, inspirational community figure and the kindest soul.

"Arthur influenced so many people's lives and is missed by all who knew him. Even though he has gone, he still continues to inspire us."

In Mr Baxter's memory, his son and friends took on the challenge of covering ten Wainwrights.

Seven started out on the journey, three stopped part way and the remaining four finished the challenge in 16 hours and 32 minutes. They had aimed to complete it in 15 hours.

They walked from Ennerdale Bridge to Seathwaite, Keswick, covering Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Haystacks, Brandreth, Green Gable, Great Gable, Scafell Pike, Allen Crags and Glaramara.

Tez said: "Everyone was just determined to finish when it looked like we wouldn't."

He along with Laurie Crayston, Nathan Grundill and Andrew Wilson completed the challenge.

Following the fundraiser the team celebrated at the Twa Dogs Inn at Keswick.

There, Alistair McGown from Keswick Trophies heard about their efforts and has since made the seven-strong team a commemorative plaque.

Tez said he would like the event to continue in future, with other teams taking up the challenge.

He has paid tribute to his father who was well-known in Copeland.

Mr Baxter worked for Norweb, which is now Electricity North West Ltd, for over 40 years. He was heavily involved with the project to restore electricity to Wasdale in 2012 after they had been on generators for 10 months.

He was also involved with charities and community events, including 2nd Cleator Moor Scouts, Cleator Moor Town Council and latterly providing the PA system for events such as Remembrance Sunday in Castle Park.
