Family, friends and the community have raised cash and celebrated the life of former Haven rugby hero Matthew “Jimmy” Dalton.

A fundraiser held at the Marchon Club on Saturday raised £5,875 to be split between two charities.

Garry Schofield, a member of the British RL Hall of Fame hosted an auction. There was also music, a raffle and buffet.

It was organised in memory of Mr Dalton, 53, who is known for being one of the most popular wingers in the history of Whitehaven Rugby League Club.

His niece Chelle Holliday said: “The atmosphere was fantastic. Everybody was reminiscing about Jimmy and sharing memories of him. It brought smiles to everyone’s faces.

“I couldn’t have wished for anything better. It was a fantastic turnout for a brilliant man.”

She said there was mix of smiles and tears on the night, as people remembered the much-loved Whitehaven man.

Money raised will go to Papyrus, a charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide, and Mind, the mental health charity.

Chelle, who organised the fundraiser with her family, said: “Hopefully the money will help to turn people’s lives around.”
