FOR over 30 years he’s looked after diners in Whitehaven - and now a familiar face is saying “arrivederci”.

Sergio Rosellini has served up all things Italian in Casa Romana for the past 16 years as manager.

And for 15 years before that as manager of the former Bruno’s restaurant.

Being served by Sergio – a born and bred Italian - certainly added an authenticity to the dining experience.

And now, aged 73, he has decided to retire.

“I like to work with people and I have done that all my life since 1964 when I came to England from Italy,” he said.

“I always find time to talk to everyone and speak some Italian to make them feel welcome.

“We have very loyal customers and I have seen them get married and seen their children grow up.”

Now Sergio – who worked together with long-term partner Janice Goodwin in both Bruno’s and Casa Romana before she left to open the Sugar Tongue Cafe in Roper Street – plans to take life a little easier.

A farewell drink was held with staff on Saturday night in the restaurant.

Sergio’s step-daughter Kelly Irvine – also a well-known face at Casa – is manageress.

Richard Shannan, owner and chef at the Queen Street and Carlisle restaurants, described Sergio as “inspirational”.

He told him: “If we had to wait until we found another Sergio then I’m afraid that we’d never be able to let you go, you are one of a kind!

“Finally, after years of serving the great people of West Cumbria, it’s time for Sergio to put himself first for a change and relax a bit.

“Everyone here wishes him all the best, he is simply magnifico!”

And Sergio’s final words – arrivederci e grazie – “goodbye and thank you!”
