THE FORMER Methodist Church site in Cleator Moor could be turned into seven terraced homes.

A planning application from P and K Developments (Cumbria) Ltd outlined plans for the two-bedroomed homes on the corner of Priory Drive and Ennerdale Road.

The applicant, Peter Smith said on his planning application that the development would have a “positive effect on the local economy”.

“We consider the proposals to be sensitive to the area and the emerging needs of the community,” he said. “The proposal and its impact on the neighbouring properties has been carefully considered and the designs are in keeping with the surrounding area.

“The proposal invites the regeneration of a brownfield site and will provide for housing in keeping with the predominant use of the area.”

He added that the “groundswell” of public opinion against the state of the existing site would suggest that the development of the brownfield site would be welcomed.

Copeland Council said in 2011 it was demolishing the church building, which was built in 1880 as the various owners have repeatedly failed to address its dilapidated state.

Before its demolition, The church has been empty for a number of years following its life as a church and then a series of shops.

The property was identified as an eyesore building by Copeland residents back in 2008, when the authority asked for people to ‘name and shame’ properties that needed improvement.

Former councillor Phil Greatorex, who was portfolio holder for regeneration at the time, said the church could no “longer be saved”.

He added: “The building has been a blight on the community for a number of years and there were no alternatives for the building being proposed.”

Cleator Moor Town Council will look at the plans in coming weeks and the plans are available for public viewing at Copeland Council’s Market Place building.
