A TRAINEE engineer at Sellafield headbutted a man on a night out in Whitehaven's GL3 nightclub.

Callum Doran, 21, of Windermere Road, admitted assaulting Dylan Whalley causing injuries to his nose and mouth, chipping two of his teeth.

West Cumbria magistrates called the defendant's behaviour "totally unacceptable'' and sentenced him to a 22 week curfew, from 8pm to 5.30am. They also ordered him to pay £600 compensation to Mr Whalley.

John Moran, prosecuting, told the court that as Mr Whalley was leaving the club, in July, he was threatened by Doran. Mr Whalley continued outside, but Doran then headbutted him.

The court heard how after the incident Mr Whalley didn't want to go to work and hasn't been out in the town since as he is scared of it happening again.

In an original police interview, Doran claimed to have acted in self-defence however after watching CCTV footage of the incident he admitted he had drank much more than usual.

The men had known each other for over two years and previously had an issue over an ex-partner but Doran said they had been civil since.

David Martin, defending, said his client had shown "genuine remorse" since the episode.

"He hasn't been drinking much since then,'' Mr Martin said. "He never wants to be in a position where he loses control again."

Doran also has to pay £85 court costs.
