SATURATED show-goers braved one of the wettest days of the summer and arrived at the Gosforth Show in their hundreds.

The historic show, which is Copeland’s largest, showcases the finest local produce, livestock and traditional sports on the third Saturday of every August.

Children and adults flocked to the event to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the entertainment, which ranged from audacious tricks and stunts involving fire and pyrotechnics to displays the highest quality local honey.

Show secretary Julia Watson said the “disheartening” weather did not stop more than 650 “good-humoured” people enjoying the displays.

She said: “The people that made it on the day were just fantastic. Everybody was soaked, even waterproofs didn’t help, but they were all good-humoured.

“The turnout was better than we expected with the weather, and those that came made the most of it.”

One of the show’s main attractions this year team was a team of motorcycle riders who performed a routine including fire stunts and pyrotechnics.

Julia said the death-defying display was well-received by crowds despite technical issues with the stuntmen’s microphones due to the rain.

But it was not all about flips and tricks as traditional events, such as tug ‘o’ war, children’s sports and Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling entertained crowds throughout the day.

Dozens of awards were handed out at the event for a number of different animal breeds including horses, sheep, dogs, goats and poultry.

Because of the weather, some events had to be abandoned until a later date, including show jumping classes.

Organisers will contact those who were set to take part to arrange another date.

Visitors viewed vintage cars and machinery and tucked into onsite catering, including sit down meals.

Some of Cumbria’s finest produce was on display and there were also awards handed out for some of the finest products on the day. Regular favourites such as Jason the Juggling Jester also pulled in visitors. There was also the opportunity to enjoy a beer while watching live music. The local history tent, which has been a feature of the show since the year 2000, was displaying photos and information about past festivals.

Julia said that there have been a lot of positive comments on the day and messages after the show – and she added that the quality of entries this year was “very strong”. She said: “I want to say thank you to everybody who made it down and everybody who took part. We really appreciate the support. We will be back stronger next year because we can’t have weather that bad for two years in a row!”
