Whitehaven Theatre Group's production of "Oklahoma" opened on Tuesday evening to an appreciative audience who were treated to some beautiful singing and acting throughout.

The well-known musical opens with "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" sung by Curly (Aron Armstrong) whose rich baritone voice and fine acting ability were ideally suited to this role.

It was complemented admirably by his leading lady, Laurey (Kayleigh Cullen) who gave the role the feistiness it required together with warmth and sincerity.

The most fun is had by Ado Annie, the 'floozy' who "Can't Say No" and whose affections are given to which ever male happens to be with her at the time. This was well-characterised by Amy Morton.

Her suitors, Will Parker (Chris Simpson) and Ali Hakim (Shaun Donald) provided the comedy element to the show.

The supporting role of Aunt Eller (Vanessa Turpin) brought warmth and tenderness to the character, together with the necessary authority she exercised over the farm hands.

While Jud Fry (Stuart Evans) gave the role of the hired hand the menacing character needed, and sang with great conviction.

The show – directed by Maria Morton – was ably choreographed by Kayleigh Cullen and Scarlett Todhunter, the dream sequence being particularly poignant.

The whole production was deftly handled by stage manager Beth Lawrence, with Jennifer Daglish as musical director, and runs until Saturday, April 29 at Egremont Market Hall. RD.
