Youngsters at a Whitehaven pre-school enjoyed a taste of life as part of a life-saving service.

Blood Bikes Cumbria volunteer Graeme Thompson took his motorbike into St James Pre-School to show the children.

He talked to them about their work and, in return, they handed over a donation as a thank you.

The voluntary service delivers essential blood and urgent medical supplies between hospitals, out of hours.

Graeme, of Whitehaven, said they work with schools to get the safety message across from an early age.

"We are an emergency on-call service and operate as part of a national team," he said. "I have been doing it since 2014, it's about giving something back."

The kind-hearted children and parents at the pre-school have also donated goody bags to an animal shelter.

And dogs Baxter and Cooper, from Animal Concern West Cumbria, visited the youngsters. The pre-school, which sold the doggy bags at Whitehaven's recent Christmas fair to raise funds, decided to hand over the unsold ones to the charity.

Jody McQuiston, manager of the Egremont-based charity, said: "We are thrilled to receive the donation of the goody bags made by the parents and children of the pre-school. We will sell them at some of our fundraising events to help look after the animals in our care," she added.

The pre-school - which has places available - is working hard holding a variety of fundraising activities to buy new equipment.
