A shopping trolley and a car tyre were removed from a Whitehaven beach as volunteers carried out a clean-up operation.

As part of the Big Spring Beach Clean campaign - led by the charity Surfers Against Sewage - participants collected any rubbish left behind at North Shore.

Organiser Steve Wilson said: "Being a harbour beach it gets so much rubbish blown over it on a regular basis.

"It went well, despite a small turnout we got to work and collected as much as we could pull out of the rocks. There is still so much trapped between them though, where we would need more help to remove it."

He added: "We did manage to clean up six bin bags of general waste, loads of big plastic containers, a car tyre and a Tesco shopping trolley!"

The Spring Beach Clean is a scheme aiming to make a difference to the health of the marine environment and beaches nationwide, particularly through the removal of plastic pollution.

Surfers Against Sewage is an environmental charity trying to protect the UK's oceans and beaches so that they can be enjoyed safely by everyone.

Steve said: "While there isn't too many surfers in Cumbria, there is still a few of us that use the water regularly and feel the need to help promote campaigns like this in the area to help make a difference.

"I'm hoping to recruit some other Surfers Against Sewage reps and members from all over to come and help in the area, as there is such a need on the Solway Coast for it."
