A memorial rugby match in memory of a keen west Cumbrian sportsman raised over £1,000 for charity.

Thomas Froggatt, of Thornhill, was 23 when he died in 2015 after a five-year battle with an undiagnosed brain condition.

A former St Bees pupil, he played for the village’s football team, and was affectionately known as Titch. He also played cricket for Egremont, and rugby union at Egremont RUFC as a junior and senior.

On Wedneday, Egremont RUFC took on a team made up of former St Bees students to raise money for the Calvert Trust, which helped during the latter stages of Thomas's life.

Nearly 50 players participated in the charity match with Egremont running out 24-12 winners at their Bleach Green home.

Egremont spokesman Huw Lewis said: "We had a fantastic turnout and it was a very busy day, Egremont won to go 2-0 up in the series but that is inconsequential on the day.

"We're on course to raise £1,200 from the day and that's through the pitchside collection and raffle. All in all it was a really successful day with a final toast to Tom.

"It's the last possible reason you would want to get people together but the occasion is fitting to his memory."

Last year the two sides met to raise money in his memory for the trust, which helps people with disabilities to benefit from outdoor activities.

And it was such a success, raising £2,200, that it has now become an annual event, with the full support of his parents Nick and Maggie, and sister Lucy.

Mr Lewis said: "He was a multi-talented young man with particular strengths in music and sport, which he loved with a passion.

"Whilst he was universally known as ‘Titch’, his diminutive stature belied his strength and courage on the field of play as well as in the face of such adversity as presented by his lengthy period of illness."

There was also refreshments and entertainment on offer throughout the day.
