A man charged with the alleged rape and sexual assault of a woman in Whitehaven has appeared before a judge.

Turgay Denli, 28, pleaded not guilty to the two offences at Carlisle Crown Court.

The alleged rape is said to have taken place on December 23 last year. He is accused of the sexual assault on the same date.

During a brief hearing in front of Judge Peter Davies, a case timetable was set out by the respective lawyers in the case.

Having denied the two charges, Denli is due to go on trial at the crown court on July 24.

It is estimated the hearing will last four to five days.

In the meantime Denli, previously of King Street, Workington, and now of Enfield, London, was remanded on bail by Judge Davies.
