A MARTIAL arts masterclass was given to youngsters from an former Olympics star and European champion.

"Inspiring" words of wisdom were given out to Ennerdale School pupils by judo star Rowena Birch, who talked about her success and brought medals to show the children.

Rowena took part in the 1996 Olympics in the USA and was crowned the European Judo Champion in 1994.

She went on to coach the England Commonwealth judo team in 2002 and now spend her time spreading the love of the sport across the UK.

But it has not been all plain sailing for Rowena over the years and during her talk, she told the children how to overcome adversity and ignore the naysayers.

The school holds a popular after-school judo class - hosted by Janice Knight.

After the talk, Rowena showed the children some expert tips in the Japanese martial art. The classes are attended by around 20 children, which headteacher David Moore said is "about half the entire school!"

He added: "It has been incredibly inspiring for the children to have an Olympian visit them.

"She has been talking about her story, how she has got there and what she has had to overcome.

"It just shows that, no matter what you do with your life or what you want to achieve, if you don't give up and carry on believing - you can achieve anything."

The children have been learning about the Olympics from ancient Greece, through to the modern-day games and the upcoming spectacle at Rio this summer.

Mr Moore added: "As part of the term, children have been learning about the Olympic principles of friendship respect and excellence which will help them in their lives.

"The children have been every excited to meet a real-life Olympian and everybody has enjoyed themselves - Rowena has been a real inspiration."
