Police are investigating an early-morning assault of a man and woman at a takeaway in west Cumbria.

The man and woman were attack in the Milano Pizza takeaway, Duke Street, Whitehaven, on Saturday.

Officers investigating the case say the incident flared up when another man slapped the male victim's mobile phone out of his hand before slapping him on the neck.

He then slapped the woman.

The man police are looking to speak with is described as being aged between 30 and 40, has tattoos on his arms and was wearing a grey jumper and blue jeans at the time of the attack.

After the assault he left the scene and headed towards the Duke Street taxi rank.

A police spokesman said: "We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this attack or anyone who has information about the incident in the takeaway.

"The incident occurred in a busy part of town and even in the early hours of the morning it is likely someone saw something."

Officers are asking people to contact them on 101.
