A Chinese takeaway in Whitehaven has been temporarily shut down after illegal workers were found for the second time this year.

Immigration officers raided Happy Haven, on Duke Street, on Thursday and discovered two men, aged 44 and 27, had no permission to work in the UK.

The 44-year-old was detained pending his removal from the country and the 27-year-old was ordered to report regularly to the Home Office while his case is progressed.

Officers had previously discovered two illegal workers in March. After the first visit, a civil penalty was issued to the employer and £10,000 of this remains unpaid. It has been referred to debt recovery agents.

A Home Office spokesman said: "Due to this serious non-compliance, officers issued an Illegal Working Closure Notice to temporarily close the premises under the Immigration Act 2016.

"An application for an Illegal Working Compliance Order was granted by Workington Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 1."

This will run until September 1, 2018, and requires the business owner to check their employees have the right to work in the UK as well as permitting immigration officers to inspect the premises.

They must also inform Immigration Enforcement in writing before opening any other business.
