TWO homes at Hensingham are due to be demolished in order to free up land that will form part of the new Spar development site.

Number 1 and 2 Sea View, Richmond Hill Road, will soon be levelled, with work set to start on or after January 20, subject to the relevant permissions.

The space they occupy will be added into the site (ex G & M Supplies) that has been given approval for the construction of a new store and petrol station on the corner of Main Street and Richmond Hill Road. The development is being carried out by James Hall Co Ltd of Preston, the north of England regional wholesaler for Spar who have yet to make public their time-scale for the new store or whether it will mean more jobs. It is expected the existing Spar will remain open during construction of the new.

The Sea View houses were bought out by the company in December and sad to see them go will be Ian Amor, who lived at No 1 and has now moved to Workington.

He says the properties have been there since 1790 and were originally just one house, thought to have been once owned the St Bees Priory to provide accommodation for the headteachers of St Bees School.

“My understanding is that the house was split into two during the early 1970s. I am the last occupier of No 1 and no longer live in Whitehaven. The building has been there for 220 years; its demise is surely worth recording.”
