A gruelling military-style fundraiser has been conquered by teams of hardy competitors.

Eight teams of four took part in the five-event Fitness Challenge – complete with a log-run, minefield crossing and obstacle course – and raised over £1,300 for the Calderwood House homeless hostel in Egremont.

Prizes were up for grabs for the fastest time, most points collected and most money raised.

Held at Cumbria Sports Academy in Whitehaven on Sunday, one of those who took part was Gavin Henry, director at the firm Crime Reduction Services and a member of #TeamCRS.

He said: "This was a physically-demanding but fun challenge, and as a local business, we were pleased to support the event and raise money for Calderwood House."

The event was organised by West Coast Challenge Events, the team behind recent Hell on the Harbourside and St Bees Beach Bash fundraisers.

Jo Wear, one of the organisers, said: "We would like to thank all those who came to take part and to spectate.

"We were delighted that, through sponsorship, the teams involved were able to raise such a large sum of money to support the work of Calderwood House."

Calderwood House, which opened last September in Egremont's former police station, has 11 rooms for homeless people, with priority given to ex-services personnel.
