Revellers at Workington's Vintage in the Town will be able to enjoy the sounds of the 60s, thanks to an appearance by The Fortunes.

Best known for their hits including You've Got Your Troubles, Storm in a Teacup and Freedom Come, Freedom Go, the four-piece will headline the September 9 festival, supported by Cindy Hoten, tribute band Abba Sensation and Haig.

The musical entertainment is set to be one of the high points of the retro festival, which aims to attract thousands of visitors to the town – taking them on a nostalgic trip through the fabulous 50s to the naughty 90s.

The current line-up of The Fortunes is Michael Smitham, the band’s longest serving member, Bob Jackson, formerly of Badfinger, vocalist and bassist Eddie Mooney and Glenn Taylor, previously a drummer with Marmalade.

Michael, who joined The Fortunes in the 1980s, said the band members were looking forward to their Workington gig.

The 64-year-old is originally from Whitehaven and has never forgotten his West Cumbrian roots.

He recalls buying his first electric guitar in Whitehaven but last played at Whitehaven Civic Hall in the 1980s.

He said: "I’m looking forward to being back. My dad was Whitehaven born and bred, and worked as a miner all his life.

“He had moved the family to Nuneaton in Warwickshire in search of work long before I was born but because of health issues, he decided to return to his hometown in the mid-50s when he got a job at Haig Pit.

“I had a fantastic childhood, a lot of great friends, and the whole of the Lake District as a playground.

“Those were happy days. I took it for granted at the time but when I moved to the Midlands, I really missed it. You could play out until 9pm and you felt safe.

"It was a lovely time and I had a great childhood here. We used to go to St Bees beach most weekends."

Michael attended Monkwray Junior School and White School, Kells.

The main stage will be outside Laura Ashley and there are lots of things planned to entice people to the town.

Up to 40 stalls at Ladies Walk will sell vintage clothes, retro homeware, upcycled furniture and shabby chic bargains.

It will also feature street entertainment and bus trips to the historic Prince of Wales Dock in its 90th anniversary year.

The £30,000 Vintage in the Town is presented by the Washington Square Shopping Centre, with support from Allerdale council, Workington Town Council and Workington Rotary Club.
