FORMER nurses are being urged to return to practice as hospital bosses look at new ways to tackle long-standing staffing shortages.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital, said that across the county there are currently 803 registered nurses no longer practising.

Bosses hope they can attract some back by supporting them through the return-to- work process and offering financial help.

Health Education England (HEE) is in the process of writing to all of the 803 nurses to encourage their return to the profession.

Nurses who wish to return will be required to complete a short university course, funded by HEE, which takes around three months and is run through the University of Cumbria.

HEE will also make a one-off additional financial payment to support the returnee with travel, childcare, books and other expenses.

The trust will then offer placements to all students who wish to undertake the course.

Maurya Cushlow, executive director of nursing and midwifery, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for former nurses who have been thinking about a return to their career. The course is fully-funded and the trust will offer placements to all returning nurses.

“Some may feel that a lot has changed since they last wore the uniform but it soon comes flooding back and the course is designed to update nurses with the latest techniques and advances in medical care.

“I would like to encourage anyone who receives their letter to consider this excellent opportunity.”
