A GROUP of cyclists are preparing to get on their bikes for a gruelling charity challenge.
Members of the West Cumbrian-based Team XIII are aiming to complete a 160-mile journey from Whitehaven to York - in just one day.
Funds raised from the July 16 challenge will be split equally between the Palliative Care Ward at the West Cumberland Hospital, and Whitehaven Civic Hall's Solway Hall. The team has a target of £3,000 for which donations are now being invited.
Anne Kelly, manager of The Solway Hall, said the team chose it to benefit from the challenge as her son, Paul, is a member of Team XIII. She said: "It's brilliant that they're doing this, and I can't thank them enough.
"Without the help and support of the community then the Solway Hall simply couldn't keep running."
Those taking part in the challenge are Paul Kelly, Bill Pitman, Phil Casson, Neil Sanderson, Adam Mattinson, Mike Holmes, Danny Kerrush, Gary Clarke, Neil Cowan, Paul Palmer, Keith Long, Paul Borrowdale, Paul High, Jason Donnelly, Phil Neen, Kelvin Musgrave, Mike Harvey, John Irving and Ryan McLaughlin.
The fundraisers have received an initial boost with a £200 donation from the Sellafield branch of the Prospect union. They will also be 'spinning' and collecting donations outside the Civic Hall on Whitehaven Carnival day (Saturday, July 2).
