A SERIES of planning applications at the Low-Level Waste Repository (LLWR) is set to win the backing of councillors.

Included in the plans for the site, near Drigg, is a new internal road, a new sewage treatment facility, and improvements to lighting and security.

The underground sewage facility would replace an existing septic tank, and the new road is planned to link the site entrance and the existing road network.

Cumbria County Council will have the final say on the plans, however Copeland Council is a consultee and its members are being recommended to give their backing at a meeting next Wednesday.

Copeland's planning department reports: "The proposed development is considered essential to ensuring that the LLWR continues to operate in its role as a national repository for radioactive waste.

"The principle of improving security at the site entrance is considered acceptable. The requirement for additional security enhancements in relation to the site entrance is also recognised in the interests of national security."
