A SURPRISE party with gifts galore was held for a Cleator Moor headteacher who is retiring after 20 years.

The event for Valerie Bailey topped of a week of celebrations with children, families, friends and colleagues at Cleator Moor Nursery School.

Mrs Bailey, who now lives in Whitehaven, worked as a teacher for two years prior to becoming the headteacher – holding the position for 18 years.

The children’s summer concert this year was dedicated to Mrs Bailey, with the youngsters dressed as minibeasts and singing a special song they had learned about their headteacher being “the best”. Mrs Bailey was presented with numerous gifts and had also had a garden party held in her honour.

She said: “I have spent many happy times, sometimes challenging, but mainly very rewarding and fun times here. It has been a privilege working with and supporting so many young children and their families over the years.”

Claire Anson, clerical assistant at the nursery, said: “The staff, children and families of Cleator Moor Nursery School will miss her enormously but wish her every happiness in her well-earned retirement.”
