Three charities are set to benefit from West Lakes Academy's staff and students 10-mile 'Dent Dash'.

Over 130 people took part in the challenge to raise money for Danica's Dream Fund, The Sick Children's Trust and Sarah's Star Fund.

The academy is aiming to raise over £2000 in sponsorship for the charities, which are close to the hearts of the academy's pupils and staff.

"The day was a huge success and it was great to see students from every year group taking part to support the three local charities we were fundraising for," said geography teacher Andrew Haslop, who helped organise the event.

"The fact that 100 students and 35 staff voluntarily gave up part of their weekend, just shows what type of people we have here at the academy.

"Their kindness and selflessness continues to amaze me and it was my proudest moment of working at West Lakes Academy."

Danica's Dream Fund was set up in memory of former academy pupil Danica Maxwell, who lost her battle to cancer aged 15. The fund now stands at £140,000 with money continuing to be collected to help seriously-ill children and young people.

The Sick Children's Trust helps to keep families together during a child's illness and provide home-from-home accommodation for loved ones.

And Sarah's Star Fund raises money for congenital heart defect charities in memory of Sarah McKain, who died aged 19 in 2013.

Mr Haslop said: "We chose the three local charities as they are aimed at supporting young people and have been used directly by people associated with West Lakes Academy."

Year 10 students Jamie Kinnear and Lee Fraser were the fastest to complete the course in one hour and 33 minutes.
