A £1,000 donation to Egremont's homeless hostel will be used to help residents back onto their feet.

Calderwood House has been backed by Cumbria County Council for a second year in a row, with money going towards sponsoring a room in the hostel.

At Copeland's Local Committee meeting last Friday, councillors backed the £1,000 grant from Coun Eileen Weir's local members' scheme.

Suzanne Cooper, Community Development Officer for Cumbria County Council, said: "CalderWood House has been open for 14 months and running very successfully, there is a great need for this facility in Copeland and local support for this project has grown.

"This is the second year Cumbria County Council has sponsored a room, a good source of income for the hostel.

"To be able to add funding to this facility to enable residents to move on, which they need to do after six months, is invaluable."

CalderWood House, a social enterprise, which opened in September 2015, was transformed from the former police station into an 11 bedroom hostel for homeless people, with priority being given to ex-military personnel. Bedrooms can be sponsored at at £1,000 per year.

Last year, after agreeing to sponsor the hostel, a room was named the 'County Council Suite' and the money was used to help the resident staying in that room to access training and education.

The grant fits in with the council's community support plans as it helps vulnerable people to live independent lives and enables communities to support those in poverty.
