A court has heard how two brothers from Whitehaven swung weapons at a group of people amid a night-time confrontation.

Michael Sean Wilson, 27, was said to have been armed with a baseball bat during the incident at Moor Row, while 24-year-old sibling Ryan Thomas Wilson had hold of a hammer.

Both were brought before a judge at Carlisle Crown Court following the trouble which flared on 20th January.

The brothers yesterday (Monday) each pleaded guilty to charges of affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

The court was told that the pair went to Moor Row, near Cleator Moor, to follow up a perceived grievance.

But when they were cornered by a group in a residential street, the brothers brandished their weapons and swung them around violently.

Michael Wilson was said to be sorry for what happened, while Ryan Wilson had been under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Both had a raft of previous convictions.

But after hearing that the men faced difficult issues in their personal lives, Judge Peter Davies, opted to defer the sentences.

Judge Davies ordered the pair to both satisfy a number of conditions before returning to the crown court in December and, crucially, stay away from crime.

In the meantime, Michael Wilson, of Latrigg Road, and Ryan Wilson, of Valley View Road, Greenbank, were remanded on bail.

But they were warned by Judge Davies ahead of the next hearing: "If you have been in trouble at all you will go to prison."
