A Whitehaven man is set to step into the boxing ring for the first time in memory of his aunt, who lost her battle with cancer last year.
Gareth Ferguson, known as Butch, will compete in a charity boxing clash with friend David Eldon in September to raise funds for the Henderson Suite at West Cumberland Hospital.
It is a poignant tribute from 28-year-old Gareth to his auntie Anne McConvey. She died at her home on April 15 last year.
Gareth said: "She had a 10-year battle with cancer. It was a hectic few years. I wanted to do something in her memory."
Anne, 50, of Bransty, was treated in Carlisle and Newcastle, and spent time at the Henderson Suite at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
"They were great with her, so I'd like to give something back," added bus driver Gareth.
He aims to raise £2,000 through the boxing venture.
Friend Jason Fisher, who owns Shakers and Joe Bananas, is sponsoring Gareth for the fight. Donations can also be made online.
Gareth says he is "110 per cent confident" he will get trained up for the match at Whitehaven Civic Hall on September 2.
He says he wants to lose weight and get fitter in the lead up to the match. "I've signed myself up to something I can't back out of!" he says.
