Antiques expert Eric Knowles is set to value people's precious and sentimental belongings at an event in Workington next month.

The well-known TV presenter and antique expert is due to give a talk and valuations at Hunday Manor Hotel on August 6, from 3pm.

The event, which also includes a cream tea, is being organised by Workington Rotary club, and is open to everyone.

Ian Johnston, president of Workington Rotary Club, said the club is delighted to host the event for Mr Knowles.

The expert is known for appearing on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Antiques Master.

Mr Johnston said: "We are certainly very pleased to have him. He is a very well-known person and a terrific valuer.

"We are hoping people will come together for a cream tea at Hunday Manor, who are supporting us, and bring small items with them.

"They have to be interesting and different but they don't have to be particularly valuable. We are looking for items of interests that Eric can talk about."

"We are looking forward to really informative and different afternoon."

Mr Knowles is set to go around the tables to look at the items and talk about some of them.

He is also set to talk about some of his experiences.

John Head, community service chairman for the Workington Rotary Club, organised the expert's upcoming visit.

He has heard Mr Knowles speak at a previous event and described him as very personable and funny.

Mr Knowles' most memorable find is reported to be in 2008 when a woman asked for an valuation on a small glass vase that she had bought at a car boot sale for £1.

Mr Knowles discovered that the vase was a rare piece by Rene Lalique which was valued at a staggering £25,000.

The expert has decades of experience working with antiques. In 1976, he joined Bonham’s, the London auctioneers, first working as a porter in the ceramics’ department, before later becoming head of the department.

In 1985, he was offered a full directorship at Bonham’s.

As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Mr Knowles is a leading authority in numerous fields.

Tickets for the event in Workington are £15 per person.
