A WARM spell will hit Barrow this weekend as the town will enjoy better weather than top European holiday destinations such as Crete.

Temperatures in Furness are set to reach 21 degrees Celsius by the late afternoon and there will be sunshine all day, according to the Met Office. Sunday will be cloudier, but the mercury will still hit 20 degrees on the temperature gauge.

In Heraklion, the largest city and administrative capital of the Greek island of Crete, temperatures will remain in the high teens and it is set to rain all of Saturday.

Barrow will only be marginally cooler than Barcelona in Spain with the air temperature peaking at 22 degrees over the weekend in the Catalan city.

Windermere and the Lake District are also set for good weather this weekend as increasing numbers of tourists visit the area for their holidays.

The meteorologists pinned the window of sunny weather to an area of high pressure moving into the north-west and then dominating, bringing lots of dry weather.

The Met Office said that there will be 'plenty of warm sunshine' before the temperatures cool down and the rain moves back in again at the start of next week.

She said: "When the weather is better it's good - lots of people want to come to the beach - it does very much help."

Alev said Sunday and Monday of the early May bank holiday were busier than Saturday for the business because there was better weather. Even weekdays are busy for Chill and Grill when the sun comes out, she said.

The business does takeaway options as well as ice cream. Alev said their most popular flavour was classic vanilla - but the wide range of vegan options and sorbets on offer also sell well.
