INSPECTORS ordered a Barrow takeaway to make immediate improvements after being given a two out of five food hygiene rating.

Concerns have been raised over food hygiene at the Chinese takeaway Great Wall following an inspection on March 12.

The Roose Road establishment was hit with a two-star rating after a visit led by Westmorland and Furness Council.

In the full report obtained by The Mail through a Freedom of Information request, the inspector said the current standards of hygiene, cleanliness and management of food safety risk are 'inadequate'.

The inspector urged the restaurant to make improvements and maintain good standards - otherwise, enforcement action may take place.

The report noted the outhouse storage area, where some open foods are stored, was 'extremely cluttered' and 'dirty' - creating a risk of physical and microbiological contamination.

It also mentioned that uncovered onions were stored on the floor of the outhouse storage area. Takeaway bosses were urged to ensure open food items are stored off the ground and kept covered to reduce the risk of physical and microbiological contamination.

At the time of the inspection, the paint on the ceiling above a hob in the kitchen was flaking creating a risk of contamination to foods prepared beneath.

It said: "Remove any loose paint to a sound base and redecorate ensuring the finished surface will prevent the accumulation of dirt and reduce condensation, mould growth and flaking paint."

The report also stated there was exposed wood on the edge of the shelf in the kitchen.

Inspectors mentioned that untreated wood is 'difficult to effectively disinfect' and therefore can harbour bacteria. They told the owners to renew the shelving to ensure all areas are smooth, impervious and easily cleanable.

The restaurant had 21 days to appeal against the rate if it did not reflect the hygiene standards at the time of the inspection.

A takeaway spokesman said it was working on the improvements and that inspectors had given them two months from the assessment day to renew it.
