THE Beacon Museum will be offering a guided tour to explore the history of John Paul Jones.

The tour, which will take place this summer, educates visitors on the US Navy's attack on Whitehaven hundreds of years ago.

A spokesperson said: "Join us at the Beacon Museum on July 4 for a guided tour to discover when the fledgling US Navy launched an attack on Whitehaven in the cause of independence.

"Starting in the museum, your guide will tell how a gardener's son from Scotland became an American hero, as we learn how his career developed from cabin boy to captain.

"We will then explore the harbourside where the invasion took place, and uncover how John Paul Jones became known as the Father of the American Navy.

"Starting at 11am the tour is included in your admission to the museum, but is limited to just 12 places, so booking is essential.

"Unfortunately due to building works on the harbourside, part of the outside tour is currently only accessible via the steps at Wellington Terrace, and other sections may have uneven surfaces."
