The second episode of a new documentary following rescue teams in the Lake District aired on Sunday.

The show, Lake District Rescue, will see its four episodes air every Sunday night on More4, with it them being available to watch afterwards on All4.

The documentary is the first to use body cams to give a key insight into how mountain rescue teams go about saving people in the area.

A key feature of the second episode was England's highest mountain Scafell Pike - and one of the main hot spots of incidents for Wasdale MRT to deal with.

As one member of the team explained: "When you're two miles up and the weather conditions aren't in your favour, what can start off as just a trivial injury could well be life threatening."

The episode features their rescue attempt of a 60-year-old man who suffered a severe fracture to his leg.

The call out came at 6pm with the documentary then outlining how difficult the job can become for rescuers as they battle the dwindling light as well as the harsh surroundings.

The mindset of rescue teams across Cumbria was showcased by volunteers in Coniston.

A team member said: "There is a broad swathe of people involved in mountain rescue.

"But underlying most of them, I believe, is the same ethos as me that is I don't like to think of somebody being in a position where I could help and me not helping."

The Coniston team helped a 57-year-old man who had slipped on a set of rocks at Caws Beck in Nibthwaite.

Having broken his arm, later requiring 10 screws and a plate in hospital, the man commented: "I have had pain in the past but that was extreme pain.

"I don't think people realise that it is volunteers - they go out because they want to help. I don't know what I would have done - they're great people."

In Keswick, a broken ankle sent the team to Scales Fell on a route towards Blencathra, with their response time earning them praise from the man they helped.

"I was told by 999 that the ambulance would be seven hours," he explained.

"But then mountain rescue came in just over half an hour - I can't thank them enough."

The episode finished with a curve ball with Wasdale MRT called out by a local farmer after one of his sheep became stranded on a crag.

Stuck in Wastwater, the sheep had been on its own for several days, with rescuers fighting against the treacherous terrain to eventually lower the animal to safety.

You can catch up with the first two episodes of Lake District Rescue on All4, with the third episode airing at 9:00pm April 21.
