A Cumbrian man found himself in Tunisia at the perfect time last week as he witnessed Russ Cook, aka the Hardest Geezer, finish his monumental run through Africa.

Russ completed an almost incomprehensible 386 marathons in just 352 days to become the first man to run the length of Africa, and has raised nearly £900,000 for charity with his incredible efforts.

Despite encountering significant problems on his route, including visa issues, health concerns and a robbery, the endurance runner from Worthing crossed the finish line in Tunisia on Sunday, April 7 alongside family, friends and adoring athletes from around the world.

James Robinson, who is originally from Cleator Moor, and now works in London as producer for the Chris Moyles Show, was there to witness the moment in history.

He said: "We were staying in a hotel in Hammamet, around two-and-a-half hours away. Our news feeds were just full of Russ. We saw how many people had come out for it and were supporting him, and we thought we can either stay by the pool, or head north. We wanted to hire a car from the hotel and they initially thought we wanted to hire a horse and cart. After an hour of negotiating, we got a car and we just started driving to Ras Angela.

"We had no idea if we'd make it on time. As we got out, someone shouted 'he's coming'. It was amazing, we saw the group running with Russ leading it. They were going at an incredible pace, almost like he'd just set off. There were a huge amount of people at the finish line, it was quite an emotional thing. I instantly got goosebumps and when he crossed the line, there was a massive roar. It was really special."

After attending the after party, James and girlfriend Chelsea headed back to Hammamet, with plans to fly home to the UK on Thursday.

James concluded: "It doesn't really make sense. It's unbelievable. It's incredible when someone runs one marathon, let alone 386. I really hope he reaches that million pound target, because he deserves it."
