A DRINK-driver more than twice the limit was driving away from an argument at home, a court heard.

Police were made aware of a domestic incident in Whitehaven at 5am on January 27. A vehicle had made off from the address, and was being driven by Jacob Johnson, 23, who was drunk, Workington Magistrates’ Court was told.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said police found the Seat vehicle being driven along Central Road. Johnson was spoken to by officers and it was apparent he was under the influence of alcohol.

The defendant gave a reading of 84mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit to drive is 35mcg. He gave a reading of 76mcg at the police station.

Johnson, of Central Road, Whitehaven, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with alcohol level above the limit.

John Cooper, defending, said: “There had been an argument at home. He decided to drive away from it. There’s nothing in the manner of driving to aggravate it.”

Magistrates banned Johnson from driving for 18 months, to be reduced by 18 weeks, if he completes the drink-drivers’ rehabilitation course.

Johnson was fined £530 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £212 victim surcharge.
