THIS week, the school hall at Kells Infants was transformed into a museum for the whole community to enjoy.

The Museum, the brainchild of history lead, Katie Moore, was an opportunity for pupils to explore artifacts from the past as historical sources and to ask questions about them as historians would.

Artifacts for analysis included a whole section on Whitehaven’s mining past, complete with helmets and lamps and photographs and maps of the local pits of the area.

Mrs Figes, headteacher, was thrilled with the museum, she said: "The response of the children when seeing the museum was wonderful.

"They were amazed and absolutely engaged with the artifacts on display. The children particularly liked the old telephones.

"It was great to see the community getting involved with the curriculum and helping the children understand how things used to be in the past."

There was also an exhibition of old toys from Victorian times all the way up to the more recent past. These included a spinning top and games like jacks.

Also on display were artifacts from the Victorian home and school, a washboard, and a carpet beater showed the changes that have taken place since washing and cleaning were revolutionised by electrical machines.

There were old photographs, including those of the school, old maps, and other secondary source materials found in books and stories.

Parents were invited to join the children in exploring the museum on Friday, February 9, and they were very positive.

"The museum was really good, lots of interesting items for the children to look at and to see what life was like years ago," said one parent.

Another remarked: "It’s a great idea, the kids loved looking and asking questions. Adults also learned something. Great job."

The school has created other initiatives in recent months to get children and parents involved with the school.

In January they hosted a Maths Week event and back in November, a community gallery was set up at the school.
