Ravenglass residents now face a brighter, drier future, as Cumberland Council announces the successful completion of flood alleviation works.

The Council worked collaboratively with partners and Risk Management Authorities to reduce the risk of surface water flooding in the Main Street area, utilising £45,000 funding from Defra and the Environment Agency's Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Grant in Aid Fund.

Recurrent flooding has long plagued Ravenglass, with the most recent major flood impacting 13 properties in August 2012.

More recent localised flooding impacted the main vehicular route to and from the village, posing access challenges for residents.

Throughout the project lifecycle, the council welcomed communication with affected residents, maintaining regular updates on progress.

Works targeted minor drainage infrastructure improvements across five areas in the village.

Measures included constructing an overflow outfall, enhancing an existing one, and repairs to the tidal flap valves as well as the addition of manholes and drainage channels.

The construction was successfully completed by AE Yates Ltd, on the council's behalf, in December 2023.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for Sustainable, Resilient, and Connected Places, said: "I am pleased to see the successful completion of these crucial works in Ravenglass, providing enhanced protection to properties that have previously experienced flooding.

"The council's investment, in conjunction with our partners, in flood alleviation projects is vital to ensure the utmost protection for our communities.

"I extend my thanks to the local community for their patience during the programmed works, our contractors, and all those involved in various projects throughout Cumberland.

"Together, we are working towards ensuring communities have the best possible protection against flood risks."
