A WHITEHAVEN business has recorded its worst day ever.

Richardson's of Whitehaven saw no customers one day this week, Wednesday January 23.

The business has been trading on the town's high street for almost three decades and this is their least successful day on record.

Gerard Richardson established the business 29 years ago back in 1995 and says that he has never seen a day like it.

After a busy Christmas period, Gerard and his colleague Louise Savage were startled the see the lack of footfall on Whitehaven's high street.

Mr Richardson said: "It's a record we never thought we'd hit and one we never want to hit again.

"The best thing you can do on days like this is have a chuckle about it. One or two folks have been nice and sad it's because of the weather but it hasn't been too bad in Whitehaven today.

"We've traded through storms of the past and we didn't have zero trade days on those days."

This week Cumbria has faced two storms with Storm Isha and Storm Jocelyn affecting every part of the county in some way.

But Gerard said that poor weather isn't fully to blame, due to having decent trade in the store when there's been bad weather in the past.

He believes that it's part of a 'general problem' across retail as the public turns away from using physical stores preferring to opt for other methods of buying their goods, like shopping online.

Mr Richardson continued: "I think it's something that people should be concerned about if they want the high street to succeed.

"The town looked empty, and I think people stayed out of town because the weather forecasts were worse than what happened.

"When the high street generally has less footfall businesses are going to see more trends like this where bad weather will knock out the rest of your clientele."

Along with many other small independent business owners, the business has created a website where people can also buy their goods online.
